Stephen's Story

Stephen Sutton is  one inspirational person. He is so young yet so wise. He is amazing and refuses to let cancer govern the rest of his life. What an inspiration, being so positive and brave at the unlucky hand he has been dealt in life, yet 95% of the population moan about having to get up for work on a Monday morning.

Just remember that life isn't based on how long you live, its what you do in the time you are here, and I can safely say he has achieved much more than I and many others will achieve in their whole lifetime. I am praying that he pulls through this latest obstacle and his left lung begins to cope with breathing for his whole body.

A good friend of mine Ruth has coined the phrase "Think of Stephen Sutton" when she has a less than positive moment or an obstacle to get through.

I encourage you to watch this short film " Stephen's Story" with Make-A-Wish Foundation he has made to document and share his story with as many people as possible. His fund raising total is now £3,125,051.50 !!! Wow what an achievement!

So if you can spare some cash then also make a donation on his Just Giving page.

Significant progress in Cancer Survival rates since the 1970s but not for all cancers

Cancer Research UK have carried out some research which shows that half of people in England and Wales now being diagnosed with cancer will survive at least a decade - double the rate in the early 1970s.
New treatments have played a role as well as earlier diagnosis and screening.
But Cancer Research UK, which carried out the research, said it wanted to see 10-year survival hit 75% in the next 20 years.
And it promised to increase investment in research by half within the next decade to help achieve that.
Researchers said cancer need no longer be viewed as the "death sentence" it once was with the new figures suggesting a "tipping point" had been reached.
The analysis showed that in 1971-2, 50% of people diagnosed with cancer died within a year. Now 50% survive for at least a decade - up from 24% in 1971-2.
But the findings, based on the outcomes for more than 7 million patients, also showed that for some cancers, survival rates were still very low.
For example, just 1% of pancreatic cancer patients and 5% of lung cancer patients can expect to survive for 10 years.
Still a lot of work to do..........

16 April - Shiny boy who had an adventure this morning

A walk at beautiful Virginia Water this morning with Ruth Colin and Jazz.

Colin decided he was bored with the lake so took off for a forage in the woods. He occasionally does this and comes back. This morning he was gone for a little while, not the longest he's been doing his own thing. Then I got a call on my mobile from a lady who said that she had Colin. He had run off and got disorientated so had run in the opposite direction. He was quite clever as he went to the gate where we enter and leave the park for the car park. So he knew that we would go back there so he would have waited. It was just that he was the first and he had forgotten to tell us he as on his way home.

Thankfully the lady was so kind to bring him to meet me and his little face was so happy to see me. How kind was that lady she was as concerned as I had been. She wouldn't accept a coffee as a thank you from the new cafe at Virginia Water. So I thanked her profusely and now I am acknowledging her kindness here.

It's lovely to know that he was safe and back with me. I don't think he really knew how serious it could have all ended - can't bear to think about it.

Penny Brohn Cancer Care Retreat into Stillness and Relaxation 1st to 3rd April 2014

Its about this time of year that I have been to stay at Penny Brohn Cancer Care near Bristol. This time it was for a 2 day retreat into Stillness and Relaxation.

This sums up how I felt about going back to wonderful Penny Brohn.

These are some of the photos from my stay....
